OK... RANTING AGAIN... but it is my blog... so read it or move on!
I checked with Lufthansa for the kids luggage. They said they have 29300 unclaimed bags they can not service due to the strike. Asked me to call back in 3 days. HA!!
So I researched strikes in Italy, particularly ROME. This is what I found out.. IT IS NORMAL. So, fly to venice, train to rome next time. Read the excerpt f from the English version of Rome Newspaper today...
Italy: Here's your quick list of CURRENT Italian strikes.
Public transportation alike. Air Traffic Controllers, pilots, trains, buses on strike. Taxi's will be slim. To make matters worse they have arranged them to co-inside with Italian public holidays. Good for natives, but misery for travelers. Be prepared to be stranded. Book hotel for just incase and cancel when timely. Put number in cell phone. Sharpen elbows and call the person who sold you the ticket, it's just possible your mode of transportation won't be on strike. Look on the bright side of life. The list is changing all the time, hard to keep legitimate information coming in.

Here is a list of the last 18 months...
February, 23 Alitalia and Air One pilot strike, 24 hours.
Meridiana Fly, from 10:01 to 2:00pm on Friday 25 February
Friday, March 11 is planned a general strike in the public transport sector 24 hours.
Friday, 17 December, Alitalia strike, Air One, Meridiana for this week is cancelled. Cancelled for second time, just postponed till January 2011.
Tuesday, 20, July, 2010 Pilots and flight attendants for Alitalia will strike for 24 hours. Expect disruptions at Milan airports, Linate and Malpensa by airport workers.
Rome Airport strike, (yes this is correct) Thursday, 9, September, 2010 12-4pm
2, May, Theatre's throughout Italy on strike, including the famous Scala opera house.

Conclusion....
Italy last year, even though a third were canceled. 413 bus and metro strikes, 301 airline strikes and 216 train strikes were declared.
It is hard trying to catch and translate these strikes. As fast as they are called it seems they never happen. Trying to keep track of times is another thing altogether. Which is done on purpose.
